Nyki Blatchley joins Joanna Fay's Character Column
British fantasy author Nyki Blatchley joins me with his long-time friend, the Traveller, over at my weekly Character Column. Described as a meeting of Doctor Who and the Flying Dutchman (or the Ancient Mariner, according to Nyki), the Traveller gives an unusually revealing interview here.

Going Forth - or Another Side to Space Exploration
We've all seen it in film, on television and in books - heroic space exploration, defeated aliens, new worlds colonised. But is this quite as laudable as it seems?
SFF writer Aliette de Bodard has some thoughts on the subject and she links to this article by Rochita Loenen-Ruiz in Strange Horizons. In this Loenen-Ruiz looks at the importance of understanding our personal histories and culture as well as the impact of a dominant culture imposing itself on another and introduces us to fiction writers who have tackled this complex subject.
Some thought provoking comment here.

Hi All,
For writers reading this post, I've opened a new 'weekly column' on my author blog, where writers are invited to talk about their favourite character from their novels or stories. If choosing is impossible, you can write about more than one!
I've started off the column here - if you'd like to jump on board, you can contact me at jmjoannafay@gmail.com

Locus Recommended Reading List 2012
I love recommended reading lists and this is one of those which is worth waiting for every year. Locus Magazine Online is a web version of Locus Magazine and any fan of speculative fiction should find interesting reading here. This is a pretty impressive compilation with both established and new writers listed and includes novellas, novelettes and short fiction along with novels and non-fiction. This is an extensive list and if you decide to read it all you are likely to be busy for a while. Enjoy.
