Satima Flavell

Satima Flavell’s first poem appeared in The Manchester Guardian when she was seven, and she's been scribbling ever since. Trained in the performing arts, she began writing reviews and feature articles for The Australian, Dance Australia, Music Maker and Arts West in 1987. Soon thereafter, she was bitten by a bug that makes people write fantasy, and she now battles with elves and demons for several hours each day. She is now working on the second and third books of The Talismans trilogy. Book one, The Dagger of Dresnia, was published in 2014 by Satalyte Publishing and book two, The Cloak of Challiver, will be out late 2015 or early 2016..

Joanna Fay

Joanna Fay is a poet, short story writer and fantasy novelist. She worked as a tapestry weaver, did an Honours Degree and took postgraduate studies in Fine Arts before turning to 'serious writing'. She moonlights - or sunlights - as a therapist, and spends the rest of her time writing an epic fantasy series set in a world she has walked in since childhood. Her poems and short stories have been awarded and published in numerous anthologies and journals in Australia and overseas.
The first three novels in her fantasy sequence The Siaris Quartet, Daughter of Hope, Reunion and Vow's Answer, are available at Musa Publishing and through Amazon, Barnes&Noble and Kobo.

Laura E. Goodin

Laura E. Goodin has been writing professionally for over 30 years. Her stories have appeared in, among others, Wet Ink, Adbusters, The Lifted Brow, Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, and several anthologies. Her plays have been produced in Australian and the UK, and her poetry has been set for performance internationally. She is currently working on an operatic adaptation of one of her fantasy stories, and is pursuing a Ph.D. in creative writing from the University of Western Australia.

Keira McKenzie

Keira started writing and drawing/painting when she was little and as she never grew, she's still doing it. She has published essays, short stories and poetry, illustrations, and has sold paintings and drawings over the years. After a Masters in Creative Writing at the University of Western Australia and a few years at ESL teaching, she is now engaged in her PhD at Edith Cowan University in which she is exploring the works of H.P Lovecraft - along with illustrating, short stories and photography. Sarah Parker

Sarah Parker writes erotica and fantasy novels, has far too many blogs and journals and likes to write fast. Currently she is working on a fantasy trilogy. She has a short story published in Menage A Trois, but is more comfortable working on novel length stories. She is also a part of the Last Short Story Project. She writes as SarahP on the Saucy Sisters blog, Cali0pe for her garden tracking, and here as Sarah Parker.

Carol Ryles

Carol Ryles has spent 12 years trying to think of a suitable pen name. Meanwhile, she has published over a dozen short stories in various print and online small press magazines, including the Eidolon 1 Anthology. She has a BA in English with first class honours, is a graduate of Clarion West 2008, and is currently working on her first novel as part of her PhD, focusing on Steampunk. Carol was an editorial consultant for Trove, UWA's online creative arts journal from 2010 to mid 2012. For more, see Carol's own webpage.

Helen Venn

Helen Venn began writing literary short stories. Now, no matter how hard she tries, she ends up with speculative fiction. Published in several anthologies, she has placed in various competitions (including honorable mentions and a first quarter finalist in Writers of the Future). She attended Clarion South in 2007 and was Emerging Writer in Residence at Tom Collins House Writers’ Centre in 2009. She is currently working on her second novel.

Outlining versus Pantsing

This Writers Digest article on the merits of not outlining when writing a novel appealed to me, given I am a pantser myself. Author, Steven James, has some interesting things to say on the subject and there are some useful links at the end of the article too. His website is worth a look too.
